This area will contain updated information on fishing seasons posted throughout the year.  Please view the posted fishing Regulations. Waters not specifically designated remain closed unless opened by Idaho Fish & Game.

Steelhead Methods of Take

  1. Only barbless hooks may be used when fishing for steelhead.  Bending the barb down to the shank of a single, double, or treble hook will meet this requirement.
  2. It is unlawful to use any hook larger than 5/8 inch measured from the point of the hook to the shank.

Possession & Season Limits

~ Daily and Season Limits may change throughout the season based on run strength and allowable harvest numbers.

~ Only adult Steelhead greater than 20 inches total length can be kept and if and reduced to possession must be recorded on your Steelhead permit.

~ Steelhead less than 20 inches total length must be released unharmed back into the river.

~ All steelhead that are hooked, landed and reduced to possession shall be counted in the limits of the person hooking the fish.

Catch Reporting

Please complete the catch information on your permit for each Steelhead reduced to possession.  A Nez Perce Tribe Fisheries/Conservation Enforcement Officer may contact you during or after the season to tabulate harvest information.

 03  Clearwater River, Reservation Boundary at Hatwai Creek (next to Clearwater River Casino) to Orofino Bridge
 04 Clearwater River Mainstem upstream of Orofino Bridge to the confluence with Clear Creek on the Middle Fork Clearwater
 05 North Fork Clearwater, from confluence with Clearwater River upstream to Dworshak Dam
 07 South Fork Clearwater, from its confluence with Clearwater River upstream to Reservation Boundary at Harpster

Harvest Rules

~ It shall be unlawful to fish in any waters while having fish in possession which violate rules for those waters.

~ All Steelhead with a clipped adipose fin (as evidenced by a healed scar) may be kept. All Steelhead with an intact adipose fin must be immediately released unharmed back to the water.

~ All fish that are hooked, landed and not immediately released shall be counted in the limits of the person hooking the fish.
